Hi Tony – You’ve reached me, Karen, the beekeeper at Brookfield Farm Bees & Honey in Maple Falls. I see you came in though Stan’s page, who runs K Brothers over in your area – we sell their honey. You live in a good area for bees (unlike this side of the Cascades). I suggest a few things before you buy anything : Join your local bee club (if you’ve not done this already) – good local info is worth it’s weight in gold. Then, get dark bees : New World Carniolans or Russians (the first are nicer and easier to find). I don’t think Italians, the most popular, are really suited for Washington state. If I were to start again, I would be in Medium, 8 frame boxes, on small cell foundation – easier to deal with in one size fits all, and small cell makes sense to me (I’m on commercial foundation – too much work to switch now). So check those things out before you buy your new gear. Do not buy used frames. If you buy used equipment, scorch everything – it’s the only way to keep down disease that may be in the wood. If you flip though my blog here, the last 2 posts are about how I use natural treatments to manage my hives.. Hope that helps. If you have more questions, just write.
